Aloo Chop (Popular Snack Recipe Of Eastern India)

The people of West Bengal and Orissa are very fond of potato dishes. One such dish is aloo chop, it’s a real tongue thriller. It is also called bonda or batata vada in other parts of India. The aloo chop recipe doesn’t need special ingredients and is easy to prepare. It is one of the most cherished snacks. Almost all snack shops in Orissa prepare this tasty and delicious snack.

INGREDIENTS for aloo chop:-

For filling

  • Potatoes (boiled and mashed)- 4 medium
  • Chopped onion- 1 mediumaloo chop
  • Carrot (cut into small cubes)- 1/3 cup
  • Beetroot (cut into small cubes)- 1/3 cup
  • Roasted peanut- ¼ cup
  • Chopped green chillies- 2
  • Coriander powder- ½ tsp
  • Cumin powder- 1tsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1 tsp
  • Chilli powder- ½ tsp
  • Salt- to taste
  • Refined oil

For Batter

  • Besan (gram floor)- 1cup
  • Turmeric powder- ½ tsp
  • Water- ½ cup
  • Salt- to taste
  • A pinch of soda

METHOD:-

  1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan. Add onion, green chillies, carrot and beatroot and fry for 4-5 mins. Then add turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, chilli powder, mashed potatoes and finally salt. Keep aside and let it cool.
  2. Prepare the batter mixing all the ingredients mentioned under batter. Make sure that the batter is thick and there are no lumps in it.
  3. Heat oil in a kadai for frying the aloo chops.
  4. Make 10-12 small balls of the potato mixture and flatten them with your palms.
  5. Dip them in the batter and deep fry till it gets a nice golden colour.

Enjoy it with tomato sauce and diced onions. You can also mix it with bhel puri to give it a twist.
