Rice Suji Upma (kalu Upma) – Best upma for gluten free diet

Kalu Upma - Ready to Eat

Prepared from rice suji, this is for those who are on a gluten-free diet and love rice. This type of Upma will taste extraordinary with cereals like Avarekalu, Peas, fresh Rajma etc.


Ingredients for suji upma

  1. Rice Suji – 1 cup
  2. Green Chillies – 1-2
  3. Avarekalu / Fresh Rajma / Peas – 1 cup
  4. Coriander – finely chopped
  5. Kari Patta – A few
  6. Grated Coconut – 1 cup
  7. Oil – 3 Table Spoon
  8. Mustard seeds – 1 small spoon
  9. Jeera – 1 small spoon
  10. Black pepper – 10 seeds crushed into coarse powder
  11. Gram dal – ½ spoon
  12. Urad Dal – ½ spoon
  13. Salt to taste

How to make Rice Suji Upma in simple steps?

In a thick pan dry roast the Suji for 5-7 minutes in medium flame, now add 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee and fry on low flame till it turns light orange. Cook the Kalu with Jeera and a pinch of salt in a cooker for three whistles under medium flame.

Put the pan on flame, add oil, when oil is hot add mustard and let it splutter. Add Gram dal, Urad dal, Green Chilies. Wait till the chilies turn whitish, now add cooked Rajma, and then add Kari Patta, Salt to taste, ginger, black pepper powder, and water. When the water starts boiling add roasted suji slowly with constant stirring. Close the lid, simmer the flame and leave it for 6-8 minutes. Rice suji takes a longer time to get cooked than suji.

Now add grated coconut and coriander leaves. Yummy, spicy ‘Kalu Uppittu‘ is ready to serve. This is the easiest and best Upma recipe made using rice soji. Other cereals like Avarekalu or Peas can be used in place of Rajma. Plain Rice Suji Upma can also be prepared which also tastes awesome. You can use red chilies and little more ginger for this and ignore black pepper.
